Allah is the Most Forgiving, Most Merciful. He has spread His mercy all over the world. If He had not shown mercy to His servants, they would all have perished because of their sins. Yet they deny Allah’s mercy like they are selfish and disobey Him. But Allah Ta’ala is so merciful to His servants that He does not deprive them even for a moment of light, air, power of looking for provision, knowledge, power of thinking, etc. When they sincerely ask Allah for forgiveness for their sins after they have repeatedly committed sins, Allah Ta’ala forgives them in the case of Allah’s right; But He does not forgive servants’ rights.
So I will mention some verses of the Quran and some hadiths that will help you to realize the grace and mercy of Allah. And I will try to present valuable information about the mercy of Allah with strong correct references; Insha Allah. Hence let’s first know what Allah’s mercy is.
What does Allah’s mercy mean?
Allah’s mercy is
Giving grace, blessing, or reward by Allah. [Al-Mu’jam Quran, word: (رحمة الله) Allah’s Mercy]
Basically, Allah’s mercy means to have mercy on the creations, to forgive them, to bestow various blessings on them, to keep them away from non-welfare things, and so on.
In this regard, Allah’s Ta’ala said: “My punishment – I afflict with it whom I will, but My mercy encompasses all things. So I will decree it (especially) for those who fear Me and give Zakah and those who believe in My verses.” [Surah Al-A‘raf, verse 156]
And narrated by Abu Huraira (RA) about Allah’s mercy, He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say, “Allah divided Mercy into one hundred parts. He kept ninety-nine parts with Him and sent down one part to the earth, and because of that one part, His Creations are merciful to each other, so that even the mare lifts up its hoofs away from its baby animal, lest it should trample on it.” [Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No 6000]
What did Allah Ta’ala say about His mercy in the Quran?
Whatever Allah Ta’ala does, He does for the welfare of His servants. But the knowledge of the servants is much less. So they blame Allah for what they dislike. They do not notice that they are impatient and ungrateful. But Day after day, they continue to disobey Him, and they forget his grace and mercy when they fall in the examination from Allah. Yet, whenever they sincerely ask forgiveness from Him, Allah forgives them and continues to shower grace on them.
In this regard, Allah Ta’ala said, “And He (Allah) gave you (according to His wisdom) from all you asked (by your words and condition) of Him. And if you should count the favor (i.e., blessings) of Allah, you could not enumerate them. Indeed, mankind is (generally) most unjust and ungrateful.” [Surah Ibrahim, verse 34]
“O My servants who have transgressed against themselves (by sinning), do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins (for those who repent and correct themselves). Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.” [Surah Az-Zumar, verse 53]
“Say, To whom belongs whatever is in the heavens and earth? Say, ‘To Allah.’ He has decreed upon Himself mercy. He will surely assemble you for the Day of Resurrection, about which there is no doubt. But those who have ruined themselves will never believe.” [Surah Al-An‘am, verse 12]
Allah Ta’ala also said:
“And indeed, when I let the human taste mercy from Me, he rejoices in it; But when afflicted with evil because of what their hands have done, then the human becomes totally ungrateful.” [Surah Ash-Shuraa, verse 48]
“And when adversity touches man, he calls upon his Lord (Allah), turning to Him (alone); then when He (Allah) bestows on him a favor from Himself, he forgets Him whom he called upon before, and he attributes to Allah equals to mislead (people) from His way. Say (O Muhammad), Enjoy your disbelief for a little; indeed, you are of the companions of the Fire.” [Surah Az-Zumar, verse 8]
And as for man, when his Lord tries him and (thus) is generous to him and favors him, he says, ‘My Lord has honored me.’ But when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, “My Lord has humiliated me.” [Surah Al-Fajr, verses 15 – 16]
Hadith on Allah’s forgiveness and grace
Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-‘As (R.), The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “The Beneficent One has mercy on those who are merciful. If you show mercy to those who are on the earth, He Who is in firmament will show mercy to you.” [Sunan Abu Dawud, Hadith No. 4941]
It was narrated that Abu Hurairah (R.) said, The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Your Lord wrote for Himself with His Own Hand before He created the creation: “My mercy precedes My wrath.” [Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith No. 189]
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Verily Allah recorded the good and the evil and then made it clear. If somebody intends to do a good deed and he does not do it, then Allah will write for him a full good deed (in his account with Him); and if he intends to do a good deed and actually did it, then Allah will write for him (in his account) with Him (its reward equal) from ten to seven hundred times to many more times; and if somebody intended to do a bad deed and he does not do it, then Allah will write a full good deed (in his account) with Him, and if he intended to do it (a bad deed) and actually did it, then Allah will write (only) one bad deed (in his account).” [Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith No. 6491]
Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) also said:
“When Allah created the creation, He ordained for Himself and this document is with Him that Verily, My mercy predominates on My wrath.” [Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 2751]
“(On the Day of Judgment) Allah will bring a believer near Him and shelter him with His Screen and ask him: Did you commit such-and-such sins? He will say: Yes, my Lord. Allah will keep on asking him till he will confess all his sins and will think that he will be ruined. Allah will say: ‘I did screen your sins in the world and I forgive them for you today, and then he will be given the book of his good deeds. Regarding disbelievers and hypocrites (their evil acts will be exposed publicly) and the witnesses will say: These are the people who lied against their Lord. Behold! The Curse of Allah is upon the wrongdoers.” [Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith No. 2441]
Certainly, Allah Ta’ala will never forgive the disbelievers, the hypocrites, the polytheists on the Day of Judgment.
How do you get Allah’s mercy?
There are many ways to gain Allah’s mercy. Some of the most notable of these are:
(1) To obey Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him). Verily, Allah Ta’ala said in this regard: “And obey Allah and the Messenger that you may obtain mercy.” [Surah Ali ‘Imran, verse 132]
(2) Following the Qur’an and acting accordingly. In this regard, Allah Ta’ala said: “And this (Qur’an) is a Book I have revealed (which is) blessed, so follow it and fear Allah that you may receive mercy.” [Surah Al-An’am, verse 155]
(3) Listening to the Qur’an attentively and not speaking during Salah and Khutbah. Indeed Allah Ta’ala said about it: “So when the Qur’an is recited, then listen to it and pay attention that you may receive mercy.” [Surah Al-A‘raf, verse 204]
(4) Not asking Allah for punishment, hoping for Allah’s mercy, and asking Allah for forgiveness for one’s sins and mistakes. In this regard, Allah Ta’ala said: “He (Salih A.) said, O my people, why do you seek out quickly for evil before (i.e., instead of) good (by challenging Ṣaliḥ A. to bring on the promised punishment rather than asking for mercy from Allah)? Why do you not seek forgiveness from Allah that you may receive mercy?” [Surah An-Naml, verse 46]
(5) Fearing Allah in all situations. Certainly, Allah Ta’ala said: “The believers are but brothers, so make a settlement between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy.” [Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 10]
(6) Performing Salah and giving Zakah. In this regard, Allah Ta’ala said: “And establish prayer and give zakah and obey the Messenger – that you may receive mercy.” [Surah An-Noor, verse 56]
(7) Not to be ruthless unjustly towards anyone.
In this regard, The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever does not show mercy to the people, Allah will not show mercy to him.” [Jami’ At-Tirmidhi, Hadith No. 1922]
(8) To become the doers of good. Verily, Allah Ta’ala said: “And cause not corruption upon the earth after its reformation. And invoke Him (Allah) in fear and aspiration. Indeed, the mercy of Allah is near to the doers of good.” [Surah Al-A‘raf, verse 56]
Allah’s forgiveness and mercy on the day of judgment
Narrated Abu Huraira (RA): The people said, “O Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him)! Shall we see our Lord on the Day of Resurrection?” He replied, “Do you have any doubt in seeing the full moon on a clear (not cloudy) night?” They replied, “No, O Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him)!” He said, “Do you have any doubt in seeing the sun when there are no clouds?” They replied in the negative. He said, “You will see Allah (your Lord) in the same way. On the Day of Resurrection, people will be gathered, and He will order the people to follow what they used to worship. And only the ummah (Muslims) will be left, but the hypocrites will be with them.
Allah will come to them and say, ‘I am Your Lord.’ They will say, ‘We shall stay in this place till our Lord comes to us, and when our Lord will come, we will recognize Him. Then Allah will come to them again and say, ‘I am your Lord.’ They will say, ‘You are our Lord.’ Allah will call them, and As-Sirat (a bridge) will be laid across Hell, and I (Muhammad) shall be the first amongst the Messengers to cross it with my followers. Nobody except the Messengers will then be able to speak, and they will be saying then, ‘O Allah! Save us. O Allah Save us.’ There will be hooks like the thorns of Sa’dan in Hell. Have you seen the thorns of Sa’dan (A thorny tree of Arabia)?”
They said, Yes.
He said those look like thorns of Sa’dan. But no one knows how big those will be except Allah alone. These will entangle the people according to their deeds. Some people will perish because of their deeds. And Some of them will be torn to pieces, and then he will be saved. In the end, Allah will instruct the angels about those from among the people of Hell whom Allah wills to have mercy on, that those who used to worship Allah should bring them out (from Hell). Angels will bring them out and they will be able to recognize them by the signs of prostrations. For, Allah has forbidden to eat the signs of prostrations for Hell. As a result, they will be brought out of Hell.
So the fire will consume everything of the children of Adam except the sign of prostrations. So they will come out of Hell in a state of burning. The water of life will be poured on them. As a result, they will germinate in the same way that seeds germinate in the fertile soil brought by carrying flowing water. Then Allah will complete the judgment between His servants, and one person will remain between Paradise and Hell. He will be
The last man from the people of Hell to enter Paradise.
His face was still be turned towards Hell. He will then say, O my Lord! Turn my face from hell. Its polluted air is hurting me, and its heat is burning me. Then Allah will say if it is done to you (i.e., if your request is accepted), will you ask for anything other than this? He will say, no, I swear by your honor! And he will give to his Lord (Allah) what he will of the pledges and the covenants. So Allah will turn his face away from Hell. Then when he turns his face towards Paradise, he will see the beauty of Paradise. As long as Allah wills, he will remain silent. Then he will say, O my Lord! You lead me to the gates of Paradise.
Then Allah will say to him, “Didn’t you give pledges and make covenants (to the effect) that you would not ask for anything more than what you requested at first?” Then he will say, O my Lord! I don’t want to be the most miserable of your creation. Allah will say, if you are given it, you will not ask for anything else? He will say, no, I swear by your honor! Besides, I don’t want anything else. Then he will give to his Lord what He will of the pledges and the covenants. Allah will then let him go to the gates of Paradise.
Thereafter when he reaches the gates of Paradise, he will see the unparalleled beauty of Paradise and the inner bliss and blissful atmosphere. He will remain silent as long as Allah wills. Then he will say, O my Lord! Admit me to Paradise.
Allah Ta’ala will say,
May Allah be merciful unto you, O son of Adam! How treacherous you are! Haven’t you made covenants and given pledges that you will not ask for anything more than what you have been given?’ He will say, ‘O my Lord! Do not make me the most wretched amongst Your creatures. So Allah will laugh, and allow him to enter Paradise, and will ask him to request as much as he likes. He will do so till all his desires have been fulfilled. Then Allah will say, ‘Request more of such and such things.’ Allah will remind him. And when all his desires and wishes have been fulfilled, Allah will say, “All this is granted to you and a similar amount with it.”
Abu Sa’id Khudri (R) said to Abu Huraira (R) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, that Allah Ta’ala will say (to that servant): All this is yours, and ten times of it (for you). [Sahih Bukhari, Hadith No. 806]
May Allah grant us Tawfiq so that we may never despair of His mercy. And may Allah forgive us all public and secret sins and grant us the grace to die as believers. Ameen.
