As long as humankind lived in the world, two things will be with him. One is happiness, and the other is sorrow. Happiness comes after sorrow, and sorrow comes after happiness. And that’s normal. Many people forget Allah in their happiness and continue to disobey Him. And some people keep Patience in times of sorrow and seek help only from Allah to remove their distress. They put their trust in Allah and are always steadfast in praying to Him.
So I will present to you some necessary information about Sabr. In this regard, I will mention some of the sayings of Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him), which will inspire the believers in good deeds and help them realize the virtues of Patience. So let’s first know the identity of Patience and its importance.
Patience and its identity
Patience is to arrest oneself from the forbidden deeds of Allah, to keep bound oneself on the obligatory deeds of Allah, and to restrain oneself from being angry and complaining about the Taqdir of Allah. [Risalatu Ibn Qayyim, page 18]
Some people say that Patience is not to complain about the suffering of others except Allah. [At Tarifaat Lil Jurjani, page 131]
Imam Raghib Isfahani (Rh) said that Patience is to keep oneself bound to the things that conscience and the Shari’ah demand, Or to restrain oneself from the things that conscience and the Shari’ah demand to abstain from. [Mufradat Alfaz Al Quran Al Kareem, page 474]
The importance and virtue of Sabr
It is a quality that not everyone can easily acquire. However, no one can easily defeat the one who can achieve it. The one who has Patience is called patient (forbearing). The patient person can control himself in any situation. If anyone fights with him, that fighter will be ashamed of him. It pioneers people to win many unimaginable rewards. Helps to resist various dangers. Allah Ta’ala will give the best reward to the forbearing in the world and Hereafter. In this regard, Allah Ta’ala said:
“Say, O My servants who have believed, fear your Lord. For those, who do good in this world are good, and the earth of Allah is spacious. Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without an account (i.e., unlimited reward).” [Surah Az-Zumar, verse 10]
If any danger comes to the believer; if he is patient in it to gain the pleasure of Allah and for hoping to get the reward (Thawab), then his Sabr will wash his sins away. In this regard, Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said:
“Any trouble hits Muslim, or any thorn (pricks him) or something more (painful than that comes at him), but because of this, Allah forgives his sins, thereby causing his sins to fall away just as a tree sheds its leaves”. [Riyad as-Salihin, Hadith No. 38]
Patience (Sabr) and its types
Sabr is mainly 3 types. 1, Patience in obedience to Allah. 2, Patience in refraining from the forbidden deeds of Allah. 3, Patience in whatever Allah has written on Taqdir. Allah Ta’ala has commanded His servants to be patient in all these matters. [Embroidery of Riyadh Al Saliheen, page 34]
Sabr on obedience to Allah is only worshipping Allah Ta’ala in the way that He has told to worship. And seriously following the sunnah of Allah’s Messenger in worshipping and its all matter. And forsaking all Bid’ah deeds.
Sabr in refraining from the forbidden deeds of Allah is forsaking sins, bad deeds, and forbidden things of Islam. It is clear to everyone.
Sabr in whatever Allah has written on Taqdir is to be patient and hope for the reward (Thawab) on that Allah Ta’ala has written on human’s Taqdir for their deeds or their welfare, and not to complain to anyone for danger (e.g., trouble, loss, failure, non-receipt, etc.).
Some words of Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) regarding Sabr
“Allah will strengthen the abstinence of him who abstains (from beg), make self-reliant to him who wants to be self-reliant, and strengthen the endurance of him who wants to be patient. No one has been given a more great gift than endurance.” [Sunan Abu Dawud, Hadith No. 1644]
“The believer’s condition is wonderful. All his works are beneficial. It is not for anyone other than a believer. If good reaches him, he is grateful. So it is good for him. If a Non-welfare befalls him, he is patient. So it is good for him.” [Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 7390]
“Allah Ta’ala causes misery to the person for whom He wants welfare.” [Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith No. 5645]
“Surely, let no one of you want death because he has fallen into misery. If he wants to do something, then he should say O Allah! Keep me alive, as long as it is good for me to live, and give me death when it is good for me to die.” [Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith No. 5671]
“There is a Big reward with a Big test. Surely Allah tests the people whom He loves. Whoever is satisfied with it, there is satisfaction (of Allah) for him. And whoever is dissatisfied with it, there is dissatisfaction for him.” [Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith No. 4031]
Allah Ta’ala encourages people about Sabr and says,
“And be patient, for indeed, Allah does not waste the reward of those who do good.” [Surah Hud, verse 115]
“So be patient. Indeed, the promise of Allah is truth. And let them not disquiet you who are not certain (in faith).” [Surah Ar-Rum, verse 60]
“(Luqman said to his son) O my son! Establish prayer, encourage what is good and forbid what is evil, and be patient with whatever befalls you. Surely this is a work of strong determination.” [Surah Luqman, verse 17]
“Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without an account (i.e., unlimited reward).” [Surah Az-Zumar, verse 10]
“O you who have believed, be patient, fight with Sabr, stand on guard, and fear Allah that you may be successful.” [Surah Ali’ Imran, verse 200]
There are so many verses about Sabr. And I mention a few verses from those.
The result of Patience
- Realization of the true subject
- Getting rid of mistakes
- Being strong faith and Yakin
- Getting the satisfaction of Allah
- Protection from embarrassment issue
- Achieving great rewards in this world and the Hereafter
- Growing up the ability to control yourself
- Staying away from harm to others and yourself
- Successes in many deeds.
Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) also said:
“Be mindful (of the commands and prohibitions) of Allah; Allah will protect you. Be mindful of the satisfaction of Allah; you will find Allah near. If you need anything, ask Allah, and if you ask for help, ask help to Allah. Know that if the entire creation were to gather together to do something to benefit you- you would never get any benefit except that Allah had written for you. And if they were to gather to do something to harm you- they would never harm you except that Allah had written for you. The pens are lifted, and the pages are dried.” [Jami at-Tirmidhi, Hadith No. 2516]
“Know that there is help with Sabr, there is a way out with sorrow, and there is the ease with hardship.” [Al Ahkam As Sar’eyyah, page 333]
May Allah Ta’ala grant us the Tawfiq of always relying on Him and the Tawfiq of patience in any situation for His satisfaction. Ameen.
