Talha bin Ubaydullah

There were many beloved and chosen servants of Allah Ta’ala who gave up everything for the sake of Allah. And the Companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) were the best and most loving human. Many of the Companions received the glad tidings of Paradise while they were in the world. One of them is Talha bin Ubaydullah (R). He left the world with the satisfaction of Allah. And he was very dear to Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him).

So I will present to you some valuable information from his biography, which will give you enough idea about his identity. And I will mention some verses and hadiths which will make his status clear to you. So let’s first know something about his name and birth.

Talha bin Ubaydullah (R), his name and birth

His name is Talha; his nickname is Abu Muhammad. And his father’s name was Ubaydullah bin Uthman, and his mother’s name was Sa’ba bint Hazrami, she was a resident of Yemen. Talha bin Ubaydullah was born in Mecca, an Arab country. He belonged to the Taym branch of the Quraish dynasty. He was involved in the business from a very young age, and when he grew up, he went to different countries for business.

Talha bin Ubaydullah (R) and his acceptance of Islam

It is narrated that the people of Quraish said to the other people, “Appoint someone for Abu Bakr who will capture him.” So they nominated Talha. Then Talha bin Ubaydullah and some of his companions came to Abu Bakr (R). Talha said to Abu Bakr (R), O Abu Bakr! Stand up to me. Abu Bakr (R) said, “Which way do you call me?” Talha said, “I call you to worship Lat and Uzza.” Abu Bakr (R) said, who is Lat? Talha said, “Daughters of Allah.” Abu Bakr (R) said, So who is their mother? Then Talha became silent. Abu Bakr (R) said to Talha’s companions, “Answer on behalf of Talha.” They also became silent. Then Talha said, O Abu Bakr, stand up. Verily, I bear witness that there is no god but Allah. And indeed, I also bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.

Then Abu Bakr (R) took Talha’s hand and brought him to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). Then Talha accepted Islam. [Uyunul Akhbar, volume 2; page: 216]

He was highly prudent and intelligent. He was the advisor of Abu Bakr (R), ‘Umar (R), and Uthman (R), and he was one of the members of their court. And he was humble, tolerant, aloof from the world. Charity never left him. He used to worship Nafl secretly. He loved to worship in secret. Kindness was his best quality. He likes to live a simple life. Verily he also had many other qualities.

The words of Allah

Allah Ta’ala said: “Certainly was Allah pleased with the believers when they pledged allegiance to you, (O MuḼammad), under the tree, and He knew what was in their hearts, so He sent down tranquillity upon them and rewarded them with an imminent conquest.” [Surah Al-Fath, verse 18]

And indeed, Talha (R) was among them who pledged allegiance to Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) under the tree. There is no doubt about it among the Muslims.

Allah Ta’ala said: “Allah has already forgiven the Prophet and the Muhajireen and the Ansar who followed him in the hour of difficulty after the hearts of a party of them had almost inclined (to doubt), and then He forgave them. Indeed, He was to them Kind and Merciful.” [Surah At-Tawbah, verse 117]

Some scholars said, The purpose here by the hour of difficulty is the battle of Tabuk. And even during that battle, Talha bin Ubaydullah (R) and other devoted believers were with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). Allah has forgiven them all.

Allah Ta’ala also said: “Among the believers are men true to what they promised Allah. Among them is he who has fulfilled his vow (to the death), and among them is he who awaits (his chance). And they did not alter (the terms of their commitment) by any alteration.” [Surah Al-Ahzab, verse 23]

Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Talha is among those who fulfilled their vow.” [Jami At-Tirmidhi, Hadith No. 3202]

The words of Allah’s Messenger

Abu Huraira (R) reported: Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) was upon the mountain of Hira, and there were along with him Abu Bakr (R), Umar (R), Uthman (R), Ali (R), Talha (R), Zubair (R); then the mountain stirred; thereupon Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said: “Be calm, there is none upon you but a Prophet, a Siddique (the testifier of truth) and a Martyr.” [Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 2417]

Narrated Jabir bin Abdullah (R): that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever would be pleased to look at a martyr walking upon the face of the earth, then let him look at Talha bin Ubaydullah.” [Jami At-Tirmidhi, Hadith No. 3739]

Az-Zubair (R) said: On the Day of (the battle of) Uhud, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) wore two coats of armor. He tried to get up on a boulder but could not, so He sat him (Talha) down below it, then the Prophet (peace be upon him) got up, even he sat on the boulder. So he (peace be upon him) said: “Talha has obligated (the Paradise for himself).” [Jami At-Tirmidhi, Hadith No. 3738]

Number of narrated hadiths

He has narrated very few hadiths from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). And thirty-eight hadiths have in the Musnad of Baqi bin Makhlad with repetition, narrated from Talha bin Ubaydullah (R). Two hadiths narrated Bukhari and Muslim together, and Bukhari narrated singly two, and Muslim three hadiths from him. [Siyar A’lam al-Nubala, page 1450]

His death

Qais bin Abi Hazim said: On the day of the camel (of Battle), Marwan bin Al-Hakam shot Talha with an arrow at his knee. So the blood flows too many from his knee, and if they (his companions) caught it (i.e., the mouth of the wound), it stops, and if they let it go, it flows. Then Talha (R) said, Leave it. And if they catch the mouth of the wound, his knee swells. He said: Leave it, for it is an arrow which sent Allah. Then he died (in this condition). [At-Tabaqat Li Ibn Saad, Volume 3, Page 223]

Ali (R) came to Talha (R), and Talha (R) had died in this condition. He got out of his vehicle, sat him down, and wiped the dust off his face and beard. Then he made dua for mercy for him. And he said, Alas! If I had died twenty years ago today. Give glad tidings of Hell to Talha’s killer. [Siyar A’lam al-Nubala, page 1450]

He died in the month of Jamadi Ul Ukhra in the year 36 AH. Some say in the month of Rajab. He was 82 years old or nearby of it.

Our supplication

May Allah Ta’ala grant us the grace to strive for His satisfaction and the grace to stay away from chaos. Ameen.
